What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person thinks, communicates, and interacts with others. It is referred to as a spectrum because symptoms and their severity vary widely between individuals, including both autistic adults and children.

People undergoing a private assessment for autism  may experience challenges in areas such as:

  • Social communication and social interaction
  • Sensory sensitivities (to sound, touch, light, etc.)
  • Repetitive behaviours or strict routines
  • Difficulty with change or unexpected events

ASD is not a mental illness, but a different way of experiencing the world. Many autistic people have unique strengths, such as attention to detail, deep focus, or creativity in specific areas.

What is the Difference Between Autism and Asperger's?

Asperger’s Syndrome was previously considered a separate diagnosis, typically used for individuals who appear high-functioning and have no language delays. Today, it falls under the umbrella of Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis.

However, some people still identify with the term. In clinical settings, a private autism assessment will assess all traits regardless of terminology, focusing instead on individual needs and support.

Signs of Autism in Adults vs. Signs of Autism in Children

Recognising the signs of autism in adults or children can be difficult without a formal evaluation. Below are some early indicators you can look out for when considering a private child or adult autism assessment:

Common Signs in Adults

Common Signs in Children

  • Difficulty with social cues, small talk, or maintaining relationships
  • Preference for routines or repetitive behaviours
  • Sensory sensitivities (e.g., to noise, light, texture)
  • Intense focus on specific interests
  • Feeling overwhelmed in social interactions or group settings
  • Masking behaviours or feeling “different” without knowing why
  • Delayed speech or language development
  • Limited eye contact or facial expressions
  • Repetitive movements (e.g., hand-flapping, rocking)
  • Challenges with imaginative play
  • Trouble adapting to change
  • Strong attachment to specific toys, topics, or routines

While NHS wait times can be long, our private autism assessment UK offers a faster, more accessible route, with consultant appointments in 1–3 days and full diagnostic reports delivered in 3–5 working days.
